Decking 101: timber vs composite

5 min read

Timber or composite?

Hardwood and treated pine give a natural look but need periodic oiling. Composite (WPC) costs more up front but resists rot, splinters and fading with minimal upkeep.

For pool surrounds and high-traffic areas, composite's slip resistance and low maintenance often win out.

Frame and joist spacing

Space joists to suit the board - typically 400-450mm centres for most decking, closer for diagonal layouts or thinner boards.

Use galvanised or stainless joist hangers and post anchors; keep timber off the ground and ventilated underneath.

Fixings and finishing

Stainless or class-4 coated screws prevent rust streaks. Hidden-fastener clips give a clean, fastener-free surface on composite.

Leave expansion gaps per the board's spec, and seal cut ends on timber before laying.
